Genuine or Compatible: What the Difference Actually Is

Three words appear on cartridge listings and they describe genuinely different products. Neither of the cheaper options is a trick, but buying one without knowing which you bought is how people end up disappointed.

Genuine (OEM)

Made by the printer manufacturer — Brother-branded toner for a Brother printer, HP-branded ink for an HP printer.

• Published page yields you can rely on for cost-per-page arithmetic.
• No question of warranty or firmware compatibility.
• Most expensive, sometimes substantially.

Worth it where output has to be consistent — colour work, anything client-facing, or a machine under a service contract.

Compatible

Newly manufactured by a third party to fit the same printer. Not a refilled original — a new cartridge built to the same physical specification.

• Typically much cheaper.
• Quality varies by manufacturer more than by price.
• Page yields are usually stated but are less consistently verified than OEM figures.

For everyday mono printing — internal documents, drafts, forms — a good compatible cartridge is difficult to distinguish from genuine.

Remanufactured

An original empty cartridge collected, cleaned, refilled and re-sold. Environmentally the best of the three, and quality depends heavily on how carefully the remanufacturer works.

Worth knowing: a remanufactured cartridge has been through a print cycle already, so the mechanical parts are not new.

The questions people ask

Will a compatible cartridge void my warranty?

In most jurisdictions a manufacturer cannot void an entire printer warranty simply because a third-party consumable was used. What they can decline is a repair for damage caused by that consumable — a leaked cartridge, for instance. In practice this is rare with reputable compatibles. If the printer is under an active service contract, read its terms.

What about firmware updates?

Some manufacturers issue firmware that stops recognising third-party chips. This affects inkjets more than lasers. If you rely on compatibles, consider whether automatic firmware updates should be on.

Do compatibles print as well?

For black text on plain paper, the difference is usually not visible. For colour photographs and precise colour matching, genuine cartridges are more predictable, because the ink formulation is designed with the printer’s colour profile.

Cost per page, not cost per cartridge

The only fair comparison. Divide the cartridge price by its stated page yield.

A standard-yield cartridge at half the price of a high-yield one is not cheaper if it prints a third as many pages. Yields are quoted at a standard 5% page coverage — real coverage on a dense document is higher, so treat published yields as a basis for comparison rather than a promise.
